Jul. 3rd, 2012 @ 05:46 am I'm Back
Finally, after intermittent power outages and FOUR DAYS without internet, I'm back.

I'm going to have to get over the notion that it's a "splurge" and buy a laptop with Wifi. Too many circumstances where I've been cut off from web access, especially when my primary income is from the internet. And too many other things I couldn't do either. Couldnt' even check my JOB SCHEDULE because internet, power, and cell phones were all out.

As it stands I may lose connectivity AGAIN this week because they're predicting storms every day clear to Friday!

Check your local colleges and universities for surplus sales. Last December I got a wifi capable laptop for a guy who needed one for $45 from a state university's public surplus sale. It was missing the optical drive and power adapter but he found those for less then $50. All the software and the OS had been removed but he loaded it up with free Linux stuff and has been getting good service from it ever since.

PDANet is a great tool if you have a smart phone.
Works for iPhone, Droid, and I think Blackberry, too. May work for Windows, I don't know.
It allows you to share your phone data connection with the PC without the extra costs imposed by the carriers. I've used with a Droid X and Droid X2. iPhone requires a "Jailbreak" application first, can't help with that, but I've found directions all over the place.

IF you have a smartphone with data feed, and the right USB cable to tether the phone, it might make sense to go that route - it's $30 I think for PDANet. $300 for a decent netbook. ;-)

Yeah, we've had some pretty bad storms here too throughout the week, though I've heard it was worse farther along the coast. Stay safe, R.H.

Good to have you back, sir. Here's hoping the storms pass you by with continuous power and with unbroken connectivity.

And consider this joyous thought: the power can get taken down by ordinary storms and instead of fixing the damn grid so it takes a tornado to interrupt service, the government wants to decommission all the power-production capabilities. :)

I had always wondered about such stupidity - like why Kennedy was always sent back from Massachusetts?
Then I realized, the people of Massachusetts were doing the only rational thing they could: Get him as FAR AWAY as possible...
