The aim of public education is not to fill the young of the species with knowledge and awaken their intelligence. ... Nothing could be further from the truth. The aim ... is simply to reduce as many individuals as possible to the same safe level, to breed and train a standardized citizenry, to put down dissent and originality. That is the aim in the United States and that is its aim everywhere else.

H. L. Mencken, 1924

You know what the sad part of this is? Everyone who reads this, even the vast majority who AGREE with this, who know it to be true, will shrug, turn right back around, and keep shoveling children and money--- other people's children, other people's money--- down the throat of the public educational system, and expressing shock, outrage, and discontent over what naturally comes out the other end.... yet accepting it anyway. The most wretched creature on earth is one that knows what is wrong, can fix what is wrong, yet simply does not bother.
