Whenever I hear someone putting unity in debate ahead of the correctness of the resultant policy, I always smell closet liberal. Dingbatted, weakminded, mushy-willed closet liberals, the same kind of sheeple who refuse to think for themselves and are just waiting for a horde of little Ward Churchills to come along and say "aww, don't worry, you won't have to think for yourself anymore. Just come with us, dude, and peace out."
Such people need to have the consequences of not thinking constantly slapping them upside the head, every bit as much as any liberal.
"Wounded" is a bit of a misnomer for them. Wounded are generally folks who are in the wrong place at the wrong time and struck down by hostile fire, not folks who are looking to frag their fellows.
Sometimes, the wounded have been injured by the enemy. Other times, they are hit by friendly fire. And sometimes, the wounded just accidentally shot themselves. Shall we leave them all to die? Or shall we say, "You're an idiot sometimes, but let's focus on the larger issues?"
By all means. The problem is that Stupidity is a lot like Alcoholism, in that you can only have a hope of doing something about it after the stupid person in question recognizes that they are, in fact, stupid.
The people I am angry with are the ones who HAVE this kind of "wound" but refuse to acknowledge anything that might possibly challenge their personal view that they are special, creative, innovative, conservative, and most importantly, infalliably right.
We are further hampered in our ability to even treat these people by a lack of basic education; it is quite common to send someone to all the best schools, and have them come out the other end with a Bacclaureate (in Arts, anyway, I have to HOPE the BS programs are better) and yet still be essentially incapable of independent thought. How are we supposed to help stupid people overcome their stupidity when they have yet to learn to think? Hell, I know in MY case, I could do with a class or two in learning to kickstart the thought process, or public speaking, or suchlike. The few times I managed to do well at it were mentally exhausting flukes of good fortune.
I concur with the first respondent, in spades: both sides have their wackos, but the right wing has the decency to be embarassed. The left is NEVER ashamed when its own extremists conduct themselves poorly. It is the very hallmark of the modern Democratic Party to engage in double standards at every turn, confident in the knowledge that the mainstream press will never call them on it.
A Republican Senator has dalliances with an intern, as discovered in his diary. He is drummed out of the Congress on grounds of unacceptable behavior by the then-Democrat majority. Several years later, a Democrat President has dalliances with an intern, and suddenly "privacy" becomes all-important.
A Republican President MAY have lied to a judge (Nixon avoided perjury charges by resigning and thus protecting the evidence from scrutiny in court), and his name becomes synonymous with political villainy for decades thereafter. A Democrat President DOES lie, both on national TV and on multiple occasions in court, and suddenly it's okay for a politician to lie, so long as one does not personally mind what he lies ABOUT.
Double the irony on that score, given that the Republican President following the aforementioned Democrat has been roasted to the gills by Democrats and liberals merely for being MISTAKEN about the LOCATION of Iraqi WMDs. There is no question that over 1000 tons of Iraqi WMDs remain unaccounted for --- the UN weapons inspectors, in the person of Hans Blix, said so. But since they haven't been found, we are expected by Democrats and liberals to believe Bush Jr. is a LIAR.
When Americans who happen to be white want to secure their civil rights by securing their property against criminal trespass, in the specific case of law enforcement either refusing or being unable to do so, they are called "racist". Change the color of the skin and have them securing their civil rights by forming a union, and they magically become "heroes of color". Unless, of course, they're Asian, in which case suddenly it's no big deal for some reason. Maybe Asians vote predominately Republican? I honestly don't know.
